Matterport

Matterport is an established brand in the real estate industry, creating technical imaging hardware and software to digitize 3D built environments. The challenge of this project was the delicate nature of the product itself. At the same time, Matterport wanted to elevate their packaging and unboxing experience from the prior generation product to match the precise industrial design of the new Pro3 camera.

Role

Lead structural packaging designer, engineer, and graphic designer

Unboxing

The unboxing experience mimicked that of other large consumer electronic products. An external sleeve around the product box containing all graphic and legal copy was a cost effective and efficient way to create global regionalized SKUs without adding excessive costs and component complexity.

The product box, foam, and other interior packaging components remained common across all geographies. A layered out-of-box-experience was the most intuitive set up process, and also the most efficient overall box size for palletization.

Prototyping, Evaluation, Final Spec

Working remotely with our client and vendors during 2020 and 2021 required good communication but also a lot of shipping components back and forth. Extensive in-house prototyping got to final dielines quicker, keeping the project on schedule. Each round of sampling evaluated product fit, material and construction quality, and overall assembly fit.

Accessories

Additionally individual accessory packaging was designed and developed, creating an entirely new packaging family design language for Matterport. These packages reflected the individual, lower cost components, but still retained the same materiality and graphic language defined by the Pro3 package.
